- Conduct chemical experiments, analyses, and tests using techniques such as chromatography, spectroscopy, physical and chemical separation techniques and microscopy
- Maintain and operate laboratory equipment
- Prepare gas and solid solutions, reagents and sample formulations
- Keep records and interpret results of experiments or analyses conducted in the laboratory
- Conduct and develop procedures for testing raw materials, chemical intermediaries and finished products
- Contribute to the development of chemical engineering processes, studies of chemical engineering procurement, construction, inspection and maintenance and the development of standards, procedures and health and safety measures
- Take part in operating experimental pilot chemical and petrochemical plants
- Take part in air and water quality testing, environmental monitoring and protection projects, and development of and compliance with new standards
- Contribute to developing new drug candidates through synthesis of small molecules
- Contribute to the design and fabrication of experimental apparatus
Chemical technicians:
- Contribute to the preparation and conduct of chemical experiments, tests and analyses
- Maintain and operate laboratory equipment
- Prepare gas and solid solutions, reagents and sample formulations
- Keep records for analytical studies
- Contribute to the development and conduct of programs of sampling and analysis to maintain quality standards
- Undertake a limited range of other technical functions in support of chemical research, tests and analyses, and environmental air and water quality monitoring and protection
- Contribute to the design and fabrication of experimental apparatus
Typically, chemical technologists and chemical technicians will choose to specialize in a particular area; examples include analytical chemistry, production of industrial chemicals, materials science, food technology, mineral processing, pulp and paper technology, recycling technology, industrial chemistry or environmental monitoring and protection.
Working Conditions for Chemical technologists and technicians
Work is often performed in laboratories or processing plants, although environmental duties and inspections may be conducted outdoors. In either case, standing for extended periods of time is often necessary, as is following safety procedures to reduce health risks from hazardous substance exposure.
